Understanding the VPP Project
Transforming Energy on Arran
The Virtual Powerplant (VPP) project is a local initiative, by the Arran Enmergy Group, aimed at transforming energy consumption on the Island of Arran. By connecting local renewable energy sources such as rooftop solar, hydro schemes, electric vehicles, heat pumps and batteries and enabling local energy optimizing and trading, the VPP seeks to reduce electricity bills and promote sustainable living.
This community-led project empowers residents to take control of their energy usage.
The idea behind a Virtual Power Plant is not to build new infrastructure — and not to replace anyone’s energy supplier — but to coordinate those existing assets in a smarter way.
Key Benefits of the VPP Project
Lower Electricity Bills
By optimizing energy use and enabling local trading, the VPP helps reduce electricity costs for residents, making energy more affordable for everyone.
Promoting Renewable Energy
The VPP encourages the use of renewable energy sources, reducing the community’s carbon footprint and supporting environmental sustainability.
Community Empowerment
This project empowers the Arran community to take charge of their energy consumption, fostering a collaborative approach to energy management.
Understanding the Virtual Power Plant
Our Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is a new approach to energy management on the Island of Arran. By integrating renewable energy sources such as solar panels and hydro, our VPP connects the community to a smarter, more efficient energy grid. The simplified diagram illustrates how energy flows seamlessly between households, businesses, and the grid, optimizing usage and reducing costs. Join us in pioneering a sustainable energy future!
How the VPP Works
A digital energy platform connects homes, community organisations, farms and businesses on island of Arran.
Participants keep their existing energy supplier but can:
– Share or trade surplus renewable energy locally
– Store power for later use
– Benefit from lower, smarter tariffs and local balancing
This “virtual” setup allows local coordination without the cost or delay of major grid upgrades — a practical, low-carbon way to improve energy independence.
This community-driven initiative empowers residents to take control of their energy usage, fostering a resilient and sustainable environment.
